  1. Ben Howard most certainly isn't the "UK's answer to Jack Johnson". What he is, on the evidence of this impressive debut album, is a gifted and immediately involving singer-songwriter.
  2. Ben Howard's debut collection is a wonderful mixture of moods. His voice often carries a load of woe, as in "Black Flies," and his lyrics most often come from life's disappointments. His percussive picking style and non-standard tunings (CGCGGC in "Old Pine," and CFCFGC in "Everything," for example) give both energy and a minor-key edge/5().

  8. Oct 03,  · Editors’ Notes Although Ben Howard often gets compared to Nick Drake or John Martyn, the English singer/songwriter was raised on his parents’ Bob Dylan and Joni Mitchell records. Howard’s debut album, Every Kingdom, opens with the lilting, acoustic-based “Old Pine."Its intro, though, has much in common with Pink Floyd’s “Goodbye Blue Sky,” with descending chords and haunting.
